Tteokbokki

Looking for something spicy and delicious? Well, you’re in luck! Tteokbokki, or stir-fried rice cakes, is a popular Korean dish known for its spice. The cylinder-shaped rice cakes, known as tteok, are chewy, soft, and cooked to perfection. The dish shines as red pepper paste, or gochujang, layers each and every ingredient.

Tteokbokki is so well-known and popular that every Korean knows of it. Nowadays, tteokbokki in Korea can be purchased and eaten at many street stands or restaurants. The dish has spread to other parts of the world, such as New York and California, as Koreans have migrated to foreign countries

The first record of tteokbokki appears in a 19th century cookbook called Siui Junseo. There were many variations of the dish’s name and its ingredients according to the cookbook. It is believed that tteokbokki with gochujang-based sauce first appeared in 1950s, and was later popularized in 1970s.

Other than tteok, the dish typically contains hard boiled eggs, chopped scallion, sesame seeds, and tasty, triangular-shaped fish cakes. Explore Korean culture and satisfy your hunger as you indulge in this mouthwatering dish!

Recipe:

Time: 30 min

Yield: 1-2 servings

Ingredients:

  1. 1 Spoon of Gochujang (고추장)

  2. 1 Cup of Tteok (떡) (Cylinder-Shaped Rice Cake)

  3. One Teaspoon of Cooking Oil

  4. One Cup of Water

  5. Vegetables (Such as Scallion, Carrots, Onions)

Instructions:

1. Put one teaspoon of oil in a frying pan on the stove.

2. Add one cup of rice cakes and fry for two minutes.

3. Then, add one cup of water along with one spoon of gochujang (red pepper paste). Mix thoroughly.

4. Boil for five minutes until the rice cakes turn soft. Remember to stir the pan occasionally.

*To check if the rice cakes are soft enough, poke it with a chopstick or fork. The utensil should be able to go through the rice cake easily.

5. Add vegetables or any other ingredients of your liking to the pan, such as fish cakes, sesame seeds, dried seaweed, or chopped scallion.These ingredients are optional, but will add more flavor to the dish.

6. Transfer the tteokbokki into a bowl or plate.

7. Enjoy!
